Summary
Dennis was ten years old, and all he had ever known was Broken Bow, Nebraska until he had been shipped all the way to rural Pennsylvania to repent.
Because Dennis had done something bad. Something really bad. And now he must earn forgiveness. But what wouldn't he do to see his Ma again? Just one time. To show her how hard he was trying.
So he had jumped. Hoping that she would come if he was injured. Nothing too bad, just enough for her to come. But it had been too high. And now he was flying in a helicopter to the nearest hospital, scared for his life, and so very scared to end up in Hell.
Unbeknownst to him, he was about to meet Dr. Robby. A tall man with hands that could heal. And perhaps, with his husband Jack, they could show him another path to life, one much kinder, one that showed Dennis what unconditional love was.
The fingers on Dennis’ head were now gently brushing his misbehaving hair, and the hand on his own hand had been joined by another one, encasing it on both sides.

They had the room for them and the funds for the vet visits – they could never agree on what type of pet to get. Jack wants a cat, but Robby swears he hates cats. Robby wants a big dog, but they wouldn’t be able to agree on what kind of dog. Every time the topic of pets comes up, they talk about, agree they want pets then that's as far as they get.

Jack's face softens. "Listen, kid, I'm not a Corporal anymore - you can just call me Jack off-shift, alright?" Jack waits until Dennis nods to continue. "As for staying here, you're not imposing, okay. Robby and I are offering."
Dennis sucks in a breath. "I don't - I don't understand why, though."
"Why?" Robby repeats. "Because you're in a tough spot, and we can help."
