It was true; printed in neat, bold font on their calling cards was Moriarty & Holmes, Consulting Detectives.
Sherlock hadn’t told Mycroft of the rift that he’d felt slowly growing between them ever since Constantinople. Hadn’t told him that there were nights when James didn’t even come home, where he left Sherlock wondering what haunts he was skulking about without anyone to bounce his razor mind off of. Hadn’t told him of the fear that Sherlock hadn’t even yet admitted to himself—the fear that James was going places that Sherlock could not and would not follow.

He drew in a breath to say more, although he wasn’t certain what it was that would’ve come out of his mouth. Instead, he loosed a shuddering sigh as Sherlock nuzzled behind the hinge of his jaw and clutched him more tightly against his chest. He deflated like a set of bellows, in truth, slumping back into Sherlock’s arms. James was tired, and as much as the fury was still boiling away inside of him, he didn’t have the energy left to let any more of it out than he already had done. Not just yet, anyhow.

Inktober Day 1: Apples
The smile Sherlock returns to her is not polite, or friendly. It is barely even a smile; that expression still seems beyond him. It’s more of a twitch of the mouth, a lightening of his eyes, that suggests he is also considering hitting her with an apple with great force. It’s not protective or scolding, the way he infuriatingly defaults to when speaking with her; in fact, it seems to sidestep his normal moral agonizing into something a little bit mean. It is the smile of an equal spoiling for a fight.
It is, in short, a brother’s smile.

As a chapter closes, the Holmes siblings do something they have not done since they were children: They play.

Eurydice swings again. “Why do you think?”— — —
Facing down an eternity of labor in Hadestown with nothing left to lose, Eurydice grabs a pickaxe and starts breaking Hades’ machines. It doesn't seem to change anything, but it makes her feel better—at least, until she wakes up on the train to Hadestown, starting the cycle all over again.
