“You know so much about everything, Snufkin,” Moomin says, feeling a little awed. “It’s no wonder why you leave us every year. There are amazing things waiting for you out there.”
A pause. Snufkin hesitates, which is very unlike him-- he usually says exactly what he’s thinking. Slowly, carefully, he says, “There are amazing things waiting for me here, too. That’s why I always come back.”
Moomin lays there looking at him, and feels very warm. Like someone poured a cup of tea into his heart, on just the right side of burning. It’s absurdly comfortable, and Moomin is absurdly happy.
Snufkin looks back at him with serious eyes, reaching across the tiny space between them to touch Moomin's face with gentle fingers.
“I’ll always come back,” he says, like it’s a promise.

Of course he would visit his dearest Mymble, oh how he loved her so dearly, but their lives were so vastly different. She had oh so many children, and so many lovers, and his true love was to travel the world. The arrangement works really, nothing would ever ruin it. He has seen wonders some people can only dream of, and been all over the world, and he has met so many people. Yet so little of them he would ever consider dear to him.

Summary
There were rumors about mumriks, rumors turned to stereotypes over the decades. Everyone knew about them, but, nowadays, and ever since it all started, people started to believe them.
Snufkin was known, in the Valley, to not be very found of social events, always avoiding going out when any of them were going on in the Valley, or even leaving for the few days during which they were held.
This time, Snufkin had done the same, agreeing to stay in MoominHouse to avoid the crowd, but, a bad last-minute decision led him to a situation he was way too used to, only, this time, it was worse.

The sharp teeth, pointed ears, claws, back paws-- He could hide all of that. His tail was kept neatly tucked underneath his clothes, hidden from prying eyes, but... he knew that, eventually, someone would find out.
