“Guess we’ll have to keep you on the mound,” Maggie says.
“And you behind the dish,” Meggie responds easily, giving her a little shake. “Where you belong.”
There’s this expression Meggie makes when she comes out to pitch, like all the warmth has left her body. She looks focused. She looks centered. She looks cocky. She looks mean. To see it through the catcher’s mask reminds Maggie of the one time she made eye contact with an alligator straight-on at an aquarium when she was a kid: all that power contained in one massive body, sizing her up and deciding, conditionally, that she wasn’t worth the energy. When she’s catching for her in the last inning, it always feels like Meggie’s looking right through her to the weak, writhing thing she keeps hidden inside. She gets the sense that Meggie finds it pathetic. She gets the sense that she likes it.

The pressure, to an extent, is all in her own head. Twelfth drafted; it’s not like she has to be a Kelsie or Denae. But she was still picked round one, and in no small part for her pitching. The headlines scroll through her mind on constant loop: Abbotsford Pitcher Gets it Done, Fastest Girl Softball Pitcher in the World, Faster than a Cheetah, Raine Padgham Throws 83.3 M.P.H. Fastball. She feels sick.

“Not my thing,” Kels tries. She swallows and Ashton tracks the movement of her throat, eyes greedy. She wants to feel it bob under her mouth.
“Let’s stay in then,” she offers. Trap: set. “Watch a movie or something.”
Kelsie eyes her. “Just a movie?” she asks.
Ashton shrugs, grin sheepish. She spreads her hands wide. “Or something.”
“Or something,” Kelsie considers, turning the words over in her mouth. For a minute, Ashton sees it on her face, the driving force of captaincy: hunger.

“Yeah, pretty often. I get it, I mean…” Jam gestures to herself. “You know. I’m pretty masculine-looking myself.”
“I know, that’s why you’re my man,” Ashton says. That’s the joke. The punchline is that they’re women. It’s a lot less funny if they’re not. It almost stops being a joke at all.
“You know it,” Jam says, with a wink and an air kiss. Then she gets thoughtful and adds, “But the point is, you could be my man too.”
Ashton short-circuits. That sensation is back behind her ribs, like her CPU is overheating. She wants to make a fist around those words. She wants to hold them, feel them, get used to their shape. She wants to press them into her skin and figure out where they fit.
Say it again, she almost asks. Say that again, please.

Denae has her cleats kicked off and is halfway through unbuttoning her jersey when there’s the click of a keycard unlocking her room. She only has time to frown and 180 before the handle turns and the door flies open.
Ashton storms in, slamming the door with enough force to rattle her teeth. “What the fuck, Denae? What did I just watch?”
She has Denae’s second room key. Denae has Ashton’s. They were exchanged with promises to only use them for good reason. Thundering in just to bitch Denae out does not count as a good reason, and Ashton better fucking know it.
Heat flares behind Denae’s eyes. “I don’t need this from you.”
“Yeah, clearly you do.” Ashton strides forward, and Denae has never backed down a day in her life; she’s not about to start now. “Who told you to run?”
