Simon's crewmates dying while comatose was unfortunate, but it was an acknowledged risk of the journey. Meeting an alien was unexpected but logical in the context that aliens were, in fact, real, suffering the same ill effects of dying stars, and shared the universal desire to survive by whatever means possible.
What happened the first day of the trip to Tau Ceti e was so beyond the realm of possibility that Simon would have to seriously consider if he had gone insane, if not for Rocky being there to confirm what he saw.
