Summary
Rumi adjusted her mask, then scanned the line of water. The sea was already speaking to her in small shifts—the pull of a current under the surface, the way the light fractured just before the drop-off.
When she struck out towards the deeper areas, Mira followed. Not close enough to interfere, but never far enough to lose. A steady presence just off Rumi's shoulder, camera angled slightly downward, always tracking without crowding.
Rumi moved the way she always did. Down.
The water took her without hesitation.
Rumi has spent her life rooted to the island and the sea that shaped her; Mira comes to Jeju to help document a disappearing way of life and the changing sea around it. As the project unfolds, the distance between observer and subject begins to narrow.

“This is Ryu Rumi—um, Captain Ryu Rumi. I’m recording this log to send back to Earth with the knowledge that I believe I may be the first human to make first contact with an alien species.”
And now the hard part.
Rumi swivels her head to the side and waves her hand before she quickly mouths, ‘Mira do not fuck me over here’.
‘Mira’ is the incredibly tall alien rock with a carapace made out of rainbow lattice sunstone, is vaguely shaped like a crab-spider, five legs and all, and she hates Rumi more than Rumi could possibly fathom. She had drifted aimlessly in space for days before she was approached by the Blip-A—Mira’s ship—and was effectively taken hostage within her own ship.
(or, captain ryu rumi meets aerospace engineer eridian mira in the depths of space with all hope seeming lost for the two of them; or, microbiologist eridian zoey is absolutely fucking not letting her mate die in space, maybe hijacks a spaceship to ensure that doesn't happen, and gets a little more than what she bargained for in the process)

Mira makes a face. One that Rumi would've struggled to decipher even if her vision wasn't so blurry.

In the immediate aftermath of Namsan tower, Rumi wakes up the following morning sick as a dog. Zoey and Mira help her through it, while also confronting their emotions and assumptions about the events of the last 24 hours.

Celine's callused fingers feel nice carding through it, and they move like she's had a lot of practice doing this. Rumi realizes it looks kind of like the braid her eomma has in all those old pictures, and smiles, because she'd always thought her eomma's hair was very beautiful. Celine smiles, too, but her eyes are soft and sad and a little distant as she does so.

There’s an unusual edge to the underbelly of her voice, though, that Tifa can hear clear as crystal. Like she just wants to work again, live again, in spite of everything.
And for the second time in as many days, Tifa can’t help but nurse that tiny flicker of hope that this is all really happening. That she isn’t actually losing her mind and hallucinating Aerith being here. That there must be a good explanation for why Denzel can’t see Aerith – why no one can see Aerith except for her.
(Post-canon fix-it) It's not like Tifa understands exactly how Aerith had managed to come back from the dead. Then again, she can't even say for sure that Aerith's really here and not some vivid figment of her own wild imagination.But hell, she'll more than willingly take it, either way.

Vincent stood by the window and watched as Tifa detangled Aerith's hair, nagged Yuffie about brushing her teeth, rubbed hand cream into Barret's single chapped hand, and called down to the front desk to complain about the dirty sheets.
It had long become obvious to him that Tifa was the mothering one in the group. The others tried to return the favour, but chasing Sephiroth was a time-consuming task, and she sometimes escaped their notice. Something told him that Tifa preferred it that way, and that it was likely by design.
He, however, noticed. He always noticed. She was always in the corner of his eye, and sometimes she was all that he could see.
Two souls, full of survivor's guilt and misery, forge an unlikely bond whilst journeying to save the world.
