Summary
It was once impossible for Eddie to swing so close to the sun. Now, suddenly, he finds himself craving the warmth. He wants to dig deep, commit to these thoughts and their natural conclusion beyond the single apple bite. It’s a softer reality now — not cruel, not scary, easier to swallow — and it’s happened almost overnight. When exactly did Eddie become capable of such a thing? He can’t be sure. Maybe it was just that he was getting older. Maybe he was becoming more comfortable living the life he had built for himself with love and care and people who dispensed those feelings back to him, people who never judged him too harshly. Maybe it was merely a case of checks and balances; the freedom of knowing that once everything is gone there will be nothing much left to lose.
Whatever the reason for this revelation, it hardly matters. The wingspan of Eddie’s longing broadens with his search. And before Icarus ever fell, at least he flew.
Salvation comes for Eddie in the form of a misplaced camisole, a forgotten tube of lip gloss and a gay cowboy bar called Butch & Sundance. The rest is fundamental.

Summary
You trust me, he told you, a rule and not a request. You trust me with what you need. The perfect example. Perfect, sweet Eddie. You’re a reflection of me, and what a lovely reflection you are. They see that. Everyone can see. They want to be like you Eddie. They want you to be what you can be.
There’s no one I trust more than you, you had answered.
Do you remember?

Summary
You keep driving. Until the road blurs, until it streaks like wet paint, liquid dark and liquid hours. Time doesn’t pass the same. In chunks. All at once. You take the long stretches of highway hard and fast, your headlights a beam of bright yellow across the pavement, chasing nothing, passing the occasional vehicle going in the opposite direction. It’s quiet. No radio. Your head is swimming with the constant buzz of the engine; your eyes are wide open and bone-dry.
You knew it already, of course. You’d heard it before.
The desert is no place for happy endings.
Eddie meets him at a trucker bar along the stretch of miles between Waco, Texas and the Louisiana border. That's the end of it, but it's also where it all started.

Summary
“You—you saved me,” he says, leaning forward to touch the jut of Buck’s elbow. Buck’s eyes flick to him, fast and predatory, from the corner of his vision. “How did you know where I was?”
Buck scoffs. “Because I could smell it on you, Eddie,” he explains. “Three weeks ago you walked into the station smelling like iron and moss. Like wet stone. Humans don’t smell that way on their own.”
Humans. Buck says it like he doesn’t count himself among them. What would he call himself, then? Eddie finds himself too nervous to ask. “So you… you followed me?”
Buck doesn’t respond, but his gaze remains fixed and pointed, his mouth pressed into a firm line. Finally, after what feels like forever, he says, “you don’t understand what you are.”
Eddie swallows. It’s an eerily similar sentiment to the one Alex had made, just before he had sunk his teeth into Eddie’s warm and waiting flesh. In all my years on this earth, I never imagined I’d find a jewel as rare as you.

Summary
Captain Buckley’s face creases, his expression disfavourable. “I’m, uh, not really into the whole Sir thing,” he tells Eddie, scratching along the slope of his grey-stubbled chin. “Still getting used to being called Cap, if I’m being honest. Most people here just call me Buck.”
“Buck?” Eddie repeats the name with the intonation of a question.
“There were three other Evans in my class at the Academy,” Captain Buckley explains, shrugging casually with the huge mountain range of his wide, wide shoulders. “Even after all these years, it’s managed to stick.”
OR: Eddie's probationary firefighter year at the 118, under the watchful eye and expert tutelage of Fire Captain Evan Buckley.

Summary
Buck pulls away, just an inch or two, breathing heavily into Eddie’s open mouth. “What’s—what’s gotten into you, baby?”
Eddie ducks his head, suddenly shy again, and Buck burns with admiration at how soft and delicate he can be, how coy.
“Eddie. Eddie,” Buck says, quiet, so soft. “Hey. Can you look at me?”
With a sigh, Eddie looks up at him, nodding instead of answering.
“You—you want something from me. Right?”
...or, Eddie learns how to ask for what he wants.

Summary
His reflection is pallid, eyes dull. He’s lost weight, and somehow didn’t notice it until he looked in this mirror eight hundred miles away from the one he’s looked in every day for months. He notes that he’s split his lip open chewing on it, but his body doesn’t move to wipe that blood away. He shaved with Buck’s razor this afternoon before he put his funeral suit on, the one Buck bought for him despite his admittedly weak protestations, and he nicked the wing of his jaw. He was right earlier. The circles beneath his eyes are dark as plumbs.
There is something wrong with him.
Eddie tugs the sleeves of Buck’s sweatshirt down over his stiff hands before he goes back to bed, so at least if he starts bleeding again he won’t ruin Buck’s nice soft sheets.

Summary
“It’s almost like we were waiting for Jisung, y’know?” Changbin says. “To complete us." Then he ducks his head, ears flaming, because how fucking embarrassing is that?
But Chan doesn’t laugh at him. He’s solemn, voice raw and honest, when he replies, “Yeah. I know.”
