“Have I ever been a good manservant?” Merlin asked, because he couldn’t very well say ask me for something else and see what I wouldn’t give to you. It should have been more insulting that this of all things was what finally made Arthur relax.

Merlin confuses a typical favor with one of the gift-giving, courtly variety when Camelot hosts a winter tournament. Arthur tries his hand at courtship.

“Has the castle changed so very much while I’ve been gone?” Merlin asks, addressing the men on duty. “I was led to believe these were the king’s chambers and yet I seem to find them occupied by a bear instead of a man.”

“Out,” Arthur rumbles, steely command in the low pitch of his voice.

“Don’t worry,” Merlin calls to the retreating guards. “I’ll handle this creature in here. If you happen to see the king, please inform him I’ve returned!”

    Summary

Arthur caught his sorcerer’s eye again. “If Emrys did have a simple, human identity, you wouldn’t have any suspicion who it could be, at all?”
“I wouldn't, I’m afraid.” Merlin shrugged one shoulder, seeming somewhat defeated. “I’ll look into it.”
Once, years ago, Arthur had been sure he could tell when Merlin was lying through his teeth. How frustrating it was to know that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Or: In a fixed-it post-canon, word begins to get out about the godlike sorcerer Emrys who will aid the Once and Future King to unite all of Albion. This, of course, results in all the leaders of Albion beginning their attempts to win the elusive Emrys’ favor, in order to be chosen as his prophesied King.
Even as his Court Sorcerer, Merlin lives to antagonize Arthur and decides to inform the world -as Emrys- that he has already chosen his King, in a... less-than-conventional way.

    Summary

Prince Arthur did not intend to bring Merlin on patrol, he didn’t even know his manservant could ride a horse. But he can’t say no to that grin, not when Merlin has gone and packed and saddled up a horse for himself without asking. It’s a dull, routine patrol along the border, almost a formality at this point. Even if magic is legal in Escetir, they’ve held a shaky peace treaty with Camelot for over a decade; it’s unlikely they’ll see any danger.

But what Arthur does not know is that the recent spike in deaths of magical creatures in Camelot has not gone unnoticed. There are whispers that King Uther is a liar and a hypocrite, now secretly rebuilding his magical defence. And to bring sorcery to the border - well now, that would be an act of aggression tantamount to declaring war.
