    Summary

Erik knows very well who he is and what he is for. If Bast thought placing him here would humble or punish him, They do not know him as well as They think. Erik may wear the body of a slaver, but his mind and his choices are his, as they always have been.

He lived by the sword and died by it; he sees no reason to change the bedrock of his personal ethics the second time around.

“They didn’t plan for me,” he continues. “She was flashing the painted bruises so the King would know I’m—” Gross. “—working on an heir, but haven’t yet managed. They thought this would justify me staying in the Keep.”

Fury re-lights in Barristan’s eyes, lips drawing tight and nostrils flaring. “Oh, well that solves it. I was upset about them sending my Prince to his death, but now I know they didn’t mean to—”

“I’m not going through this again,” he says firmly. “It’s dull and I hate it. The point is that you don’t need to rampage through the castle, getting yourself in trouble.”

“Me—” Barristan closes his eyes and exhales. “You promised,” he says. “We talked about vows years ago. I have yours. We will go to war to get you back if need be. All you need to do is use all that wrath bubbling away in your soul at all times and endure.”

Dramatic. “I gave you my word,” he says. He means it, too. He will do what he can. “But freedom, old man; freedom is around the corner. This is the best night of my life.” This life, but that’s okay.

This turns out to be the wrong thing to say, because Barristan’s shoulders curve inward, expression shattering into grief. “There is no end of injustice that was aimed your way, but that—And I dare not say you are exaggerating, because I know you are not.”

“Nobody said freedom would come cheap.”

    Summary

Svetlana was going to love Shane. She could tell immediately. She had never in her life believed in love at first sight, but she considered herself a good judge of character, and she had strong opinions on basically everything. Very rarely was her first impression wrong, and her first impression of Shane Hollander told her that he was going to be very, very important to her in the not-so-distant future.

    --

Svetlana learns that Jane is Shane Hollander at the start of the 2017-2018 hockey season. She immediately decides that she and Shane are going to be friends. After all, Ilya is her best friend, and Shane is love of her best friend's life; it just makes sense to be his friend, too. She's pretty sure that's how it works.

Over the following years, she gets a few opportunities to solidify that friendship, and help both Shane and Ilya feel a little less lonely.

Or: The events of the Long Game, with Show!Svetlana meddling just a little.

He texted her sometimes, but whenever she brought up Jane he got cagey. I want to tell you in person.

She should have figured he was trying to schedule an actual meeting with Jane, instead of just a dinner between the two of them, but – well. Ilya had been reluctant to even admit that Jane existed, before. She figured it would take awhile to get to the point where he was okay introducing them. She was not expecting to get ambushed on a random Thursday night two weeks into the hockey season by Shane Fucking Hollander.

    “Oh my god,” she said.

Shane looked a little bit like he wanted to die. “Hello,” he said, very politely.

“You are way out of his league, you know.” This wasn't necessarily true – she loved Ilya, after all, and she could admit he was incredibly good looking – but it was the exact type of thing that would make Ilya hiss like a cat, which he promptly did, making an annoyed scoffing noise next to her while he crossed his arms.

Shane looked at her like she was insane. “No I’m not. I mean – you’ve seen him, right?” Next to her, Ilya preened like a moron.

Oh fuck. She was going to love this man. She could tell immediately.

Ilya takes a breath. “I want to talk to you. About dying.”

    Shane freezes completely. “Ilya.”

“Not like that,” Ilya reassures him in a hurry. “Not like I used to.”

Shane doesn’t relax even a fraction. He’s right to be suspicious. On the worst days, Ilya used to lie, and Shane could always tell.

Ilya ploughs on. “We need to think about what we want. When we are dead.”

    ---

A death leads Ilya and Shane to discuss what they want to happen once they die.

When he wakes up the next morning, Shane is sitting up against the headboard, eyes red-rimmed and swollen.

“We can talk about it,” Shane says, as soon as Ilya looks up at him. “On one condition.”

    “What?” Ilya asks.

“We have to decide together. I know you said you don’t care. I believe you. But I care. I have to know it’s something you’re comfortable with.”

Ilya opens his mouth, but Shane cuts him off. “That’s it. That’s all I want. Your honest opinion on whatever I bring up. And do not fucking lie. Not about this. Okay?”

    Ilya nods. “Okay.”

    Summary

Shane grabbed a teaspoon from the drawer next to him and dipped it into the sauce, turning to face Ilya with his hand cupped underneath it to catch the drips. As he moved around the island, Ilya’s pulse picked up again and his brain smashed together a montage of nights like this from some imagined future. Shane cooking for him in their kitchen, offering his creation up for Ilya’s judgement. Maybe there would be a nice playlist on. Maybe the pasta would be actual pasta, not chickpea. Maybe they’d be cooking for more than just the two of them. Christ.

Balancing on the cusp of a something new, Ilya boards a flight to Shane's cottage for two weeks.

When was the last time he had told his mother that he loved her?

The forgetting was its own second kind of grief, and Ilya decided now that he wouldn’t let it happen twice. He would tell Shane that he loved him, and he would sear the memory of it into his brain forever. He’d feel the sting and the burn of it, knowing that whatever happened, many years from now, here would be a memory that he could not write over. Here is when I was in love, it would say. Here was when I told him. All Ilya could pray for was that Shane’s nervousness, the way his eyes looked too big for his face and the flush that would crawl its way up his cheeks when Ilya caught him staring, was in service of a feeling that echoed his own.

“You’re cold. Let’s go inside,” Shane said quietly.

My lovely, kind boy, Ilya thought.
