Summary
Leon doesn’t like being back here. Raccoon City is his old haunt. He has more negative memories associated with this city than positive at this point. But there were reports of people sneaking in. It didn’t sound like a real threat, most likely college kids getting too curious and somehow having the balls to sneak in. If that’s the case, Leon’s hoping it’ll be fairly easy actually getting them out once he finds them. He can only pray that they’re still alive.
Something glints in the corner of his vision. Leon grabs his gun, aims it, and looks for the source.
It’s amazing what can survive the end of the world. An apartment in a high rise, a children’s toy, an old car, a phone. The phone is sitting abandoned on the ground by a car. It’s almost as if it was purposefully placed there. Leon lowers his gun and picks up the phone. It’s covered in dust and the screen is cracked. He presses down on the power button. The battery symbol pops up. Working, just dead.

He is though. He stares at Stebbins quite often in fact. Stebbins captured his heart months ago when he gifted Hank a copy of one of his favorite books wrapped neatly in deep blue wrapping paper and a white lace ribbon tied around it. Not a single flaw in the wrapping. Stebbins had explained that Ray brought up that Hank lost his original copy while moving in with Art. It was an offhand comment that Ray made while they were browsing the bookstore together. There was no weight behind it. He wasn’t suggesting either one of them buy Hank a new copy. It’s far more likely that Ray only mentioned it so he could remember to bring it up later to Hank.
And Stebbins bought him a new copy, showed up at his apartment, walked in like he belonged there after Art answered the door, and knocked on Hank’s bedroom door. Hank remembers opening up his bedroom door and looking down at the wrapped book Stebbins was holding out for him.
“Garraty mentioned you lost your copy,”
Hank had carefully unwrapped the green wrapping paper. His favorite color. The paper and ribbon fell to the floor, revealing a pristine copy of 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
“Oh,” Hank had said.
