Excerpt:
“I saw a man took your suit,” Davy continued, “Would you like to explain that?”
“It was a rental,” Micky said, “I couldn’t keep up the monthly payments.”
They smiled at each other over the joke.
“Yes, I see,” Davy said, “I’m sorry to say I’ll have to let you go as my chauffeur. Maybe, if he’d at least left you the hat, but— well, this just won’t do at all, will it?”
Micky fell to his knees, hugging Davy’s legs, groveling. “Don’t fire me, Mr. Jones! Please! This is the only job I’ve got! I might have a family that depends on me, someday! I’ll find one this week, if you let me keep my job!”
Davy pet Micky’s hair and let him grovel this way for longer than was really necessary for what they were doing. It had nothing to do with the character he was in at all. He loved Micky, loved the silly boy that would cling to him and make a fool of himself for him, and would have missed him so terribly if they’d had to be apart from one another that it made him have to blink away an itch creeping into his eyes. “Oh, don’t beg,” he said, “Get back up. I might have another position you can fill.”
