The warlock didn't drop his mocking smile, but raised an eyebrow at him. And at the faerie vines wrapping around him, moving towards his throat, just slow enough to give Alec time to contemplate his coming death. Seelie traps were the worst.

“I’m gonna miss you,” Carl says quietly, softly petting down Donut's spine. “Even though you’re a pain in the ass.”
Donut presses her cold as fuck nose to the underside of his jaw, just to be an asshole, and Carl chuckles at her inadvertent retaliation.
Donut can’t understand what he’s saying. Donut can’t properly listen to the words he tells her. It’s no use to tell the truth, or to lie, or to say anything at all. She’s a cat, for fuck’s sake, it doesn’t even matter.
And yet—
Carl turns his head, sticks his face in Donut’s soft fur, and whispers, “I’m sorry.”
OR: five times Carl talks to Donut before the dungeon, and one time he realizes maybe she's been listening all along.
