I love you, I want to say, impossibly. And I do, I do so much that it aches and it burrows and it festers right under my skin and between my diaphragm and my lungs and that spot Rocky would fit perfectly, and hey, how's that box looking, Ryland?
The same as it's always looked, which is to say it's looking like a damn flimsy mirage. I would take Rocky under my ribs, if I could. I would press him against my spinal cord to feel the touch and signal that I've never craved in this way from another person in my entire life.
ALTERNATE TITLE: Awake craniotomy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other inadvisable medical treatments that one Dr. Ryland Grace definitely doesn't have a craving for his best friend to perform on him.

“Not — not understand,” Rocky continues, a little higher now, his body shuddering. “Try Vℓ times, all failure failure failure. Eridian mating sometimes fail, but not this much. This much unprecedented. Thought location, temperature, time of year problems in previous attempts — fixed all, Grace know Rocky and Adrian work to fix all, and still failure, still.”
Grace fidgets with his hands, stretching each knuckle and palming the free edge of each nail, to keep from throwing himself onto Rocky and howling like an animal.
(Because somewhere along the way, Rocky and Adrian's wish for kids had become Grace's own, too.)
OR: Rocky and Adrian's eggs keep dying long before they hatch, and no one knows why. Grace — who definitely doesn't see himself as a parent to those hatchlings, how stupid and impossible would that be?! — has the normal reaction, which is inventing gene therapy from scratch to help the next egg survive.

Summary
In the weeks following the arrival at Erid, Grace has a lot of things to get used to. The Eridians are peculiar, the temperature onboard is parallel to his worst nightmare, and Rocky is away most of the time. He understands that Rocky’s time is best spent in other places than in his arms– perhaps best spent catching up with Adrian. Even so he can’t help but yearn for his mate. Even more so he can’t help but yearn for Adrian’s approval, too, but the plan was to ease Adrian (and all of Erid) into the news of their mating gently.
Yet things just can’t seem to ever go as planned.
One day, Rocky doesn’t show up, and as soon as Grace hears why… Oh. He won’t have it. On that day, Grace puts on his EVA suit and decides it’s time for a rescue mission. It doesn't matter that he might burn for it.
Or: Rocky gets sent to jail and Grace does all the stupid shit he shouldn’t to get Adrian and Rocky reunited… again.

My arm hangs limply by my side as Rocky takes my hand into his, examining it closely. He pulls my fingers apart, then wraps his hand around each of them, one after the other.
“What’chu doing, bud?”
He looks up at me, making a noise that I recognize as an idea brewing in his brain. “I will make rings,” he says.
“What?” I ask. And again, as my brain truly catches up with the meaning of what he’s said: “Wait, sorry, what?”
Rocky releases my hand, straightening like a man on a mission. “You say rings mean staying together forever. I make rings for us. So we stay together. Like last-finger-promise.”

I remind myself that Rocky can see right through my boxers, right through me. He can track every pulse, every micro-tremor, every erratic spike of adrenaline. He knows my biology better than I do at this point.
My stomach goes belly-up with the knowledge, a giddy thrill. It is equal parts exhilarating and humiliating.
Here’s the thing: I know him too. I can perceive him in a way that is just as foreign to him as his sensory array is to me, through sight. No Eridian could do that. Gosh.
With that train of thought, it’s almost impossible to think that we weren’t made for each other. This is what I mean by technicalities—no, we can’t touch. Yes, we are completely different species from completely different corners of the galaxy, born under entirely different suns and breathing different atmospheres. But all of human and Eridian biology seems like a very long, very complicated setup for this exact moment.

“You’re going to kill me,” Grace rasps, shivering with pleasure in my arms.
“Complain, complain, complain,” I hum. I stroke his hair, then vibrate my stridulatory organ to sharpen my active sonar.
Grace is smiling stupidly, his arms still flung around my carapace and his finger tracing a little pattern on it. It’s his culture’s metaphorical ideograph for love, I realise, two mirrored curves coming from a cusp and meeting in a point.
I’m not sure if he knows I recognise the heart symbol. Either way, it makes an embarrassingly primal part of me want to swallow him whole, just to keep him safe and treasured inside of me forever.

After reuniting post-Taumoeba leak, Grace’s insomnia starts to make him a little needy. Rocky quickly realizes he has his work cut out for him. (Inspired by a deleted scene from the film!)

Grace has many Earth sayings that Rocky has grown fond of. To use one of his most favorite, in Rocky’s defense, he had assumed that humans, due to their unfortunate condition of being extraneously fleshy and containing concerning amounts of liquid, were being dramatic, as humans often are, about the impact of small scale penetration for slightly extended periods of time. But Rocky loves his Grace very much and likes giving him nice things, so he intends to uncover the truth for himself.
Upon further investigation, he fears the humans were not, in fact, being dramatic.

“Good good, now use welding tool to join.” He moves Grace’s wrist to position the rod so it turns farther outward.
“Slow slow gentle,” he repeats. Grace is actually going to die.
He stretches his finger, tugging the wires connecting the mechanisms, and clicks the fingertips together to create a spark. Rocky chitters cheerfully behind him.
“Good good, Grace doing good.”
Grace’s face is burning. Rocky’s body heat seeps into him; he’s running hot all over, but especially in his face. Rocky doesn’t comment on it yet, hopefully ascribing Grace’s fever-like state to his own body being a smelting furnace.
He wets his dry lips again. “Thanks, bud, I think I’m getting the hang of it.”
Grace sucks at flirting. But when he comes across Ghost (1990) while looking for something to watch for their movie night, he has a brilliant idea: to recreate the pottery wheel scene with Rocky. He asks Rocky to teach him to make xenonite sculptures using Eridian welding tools. Naturally, things escalate from there.

Including in his neck, where Rocky's third hand rests. His heart is hammering in his chest, and now he knows that Rocky can feel it through his fingers instead of just hearing it as he usually does.
