Summary
A loud buzzing sounds between her ears. It drowns out the ED, the commentary of the other nurses as Ahmad hits play on a video cued up from a local news’ YouTube channel that reads HOSTAGE SITUATION AT PITTSBURGH BANK in the lower chyron.
The video shows a shaky camera zoomed way far in as, yeah, that’s definitely Jack, walking toward the front doors of a Philly First National branch with his hands held up in surrender.
Or—
Jack’s TEMS shift goes awry, and all Samira can do is wait.

Summary
Honestly, he expected the crash to hit him sooner. Once Robby was off the roof. Once they were out of the hospital. Once the alcohol hit his system. That was the whole point of meeting in the park, to weather the crash together. Co-regulation isn’t always an option, he could hear his therapist reminding him for the millionth time, but if it is, it can be a huge help. And wasn’t that what he was just saying to Robby? We survived as a species because we learned how to cooperate and communicate...

Summary
It had been a mercifully slow and uneventful night, which was probably the only reason he was still standing and hadn’t keeled over around four am, pushing through the stabbing pain in his side and the climbing fever.
Appendicitis, possibly peritonitis already.
It wasn’t an educated guess, he knew; he had known for hours at that point, probably even days, if he put the denial aside.

Santos leaned her elbows on the counter and lowered her voice. “We’re thinking of running a small fundraiser.”
Dana’s eyebrows lifted. “For?”
“The auction,” Santos said. “To bid on Dr. Abbot.”
Dana studied them for a moment. “And why would you do that?”
“It’s for Dr. Robby.”
Or, the annual PTMC Charity Auction is coming up and the charming Dr. Jack Abbot is up for grabs. Santos has a plan to get him for Dr. Robby and stir up a little chaos in the process.

Summary
Denial. Robby could recite the stages of grief like a prayer. But this? No, it simply wasn’t true. He’d seen Jack, what, an hour and a half before 8:24? Jack, who’d joked about…something. What was it? Hawkeye, that was it. Jack had called Robby ‘Hawkeye.’ And then he’d left, saying he’d see him tonight. Jack had said specifically that, he’d said he’d see Robby tonight. That wasn’t…that just wouldn’t make sense.
“No, he, uh…he’s back on duty in a couple hours, he’ll be coming in for his shift.”
It was such an inane thing to say. Exactly the sort of thing he’d find heartrendingly innocent in the family of a patient, when delivering the bad news. Not rational. Not real. But this had to be real, Jack had to be coming in for his shift. Handover was in two hours.
Officer Anders stepped in. “We’d like you to come down to the station with us to identify the body.”
-----
Robby finds out that he's Jack's emergency contact in the worst possible way: when he's called in to identify the body.
Can be a sequel to 'Day or Night,' but also works as a standalone. Title from 'I Was an Island' by John-Allison Weiss.

Summary
It’s the spring of ‘97 when Michael Robinavitch is dragged into a gay bar for the very first time.
When he meets Jack Abbot there, the two of them are on the cusp of radically different futures: Robby is about to begin his residency, and Jack is leaving for the army. They know better than to get attached - know the timing is wrong, the goodbye inevitable - but something tender takes root anyway. Through every deployment, Jack thinks of Robby more than he ought to; through every failed relationship, Robby wonders about what might've been.
Years later, when their paths cross again at PTMC, the past resurfaces — and though they’re older, more jaded, and scarred in different ways, they find themselves pulled towards everything they left unfinished.

Summary
The moment Robby realized, he wanted to kick himself for not picking up on it sooner. It was glaringly obvious now that he had the terminology to describe his husband.
The way Jack was overly intense with eye contact, the way he never seemed to know where to put his hands when he wasn't holding something, the way he would ramble nonsense when he was nervous, his obsession with M*A*S*H and honeybees, his flat tone that came off as perpetually sarcastic.

“Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it,” Trinity says, folding a slip of paper in half and dropping it into a mason jar. They’re cross-legged on the plush carpet in Trinity’s living room, huddled around the chipped coffee table. The wine bottle in the center is nearly empty, each of their glasses bearing a generous pour. “Last year, I said I wanted a hot surgeon girlfriend, and look at me now.” Samira rolls her eyes.

Summary
Sometimes Zoe thinks she has surpassed the point of needing to work in the café every day. That’s what she pays her staff for, after all. But then she finds herself puttering around at home feeling both useless and restless at the same time, so she moseys into the shop to keep her hands busy, and then feels much better afterward. Or she has one of those days where a handful of lovely interactions with customers reinvigorate her desire to keep coming in day after day.

Summary
She has given up with polite refusal, finds a tube of aquaphor in the little door pocket that she does not remember placing there but is definitely hers. He can’t make intense, unfaltering eye contact with her when he asks her how she is feeling after a shift, she can leave little white lies in her wake as he drives, can tell him she’s okay, and can’t be stared down into changing her answer. She can begin her decompression next to him in a way she can’t on the bus, can shake her hair out of its tight confines, really check in with her body, with her breathing, can allow herself to relax for a short while, the weight of the commute lifted from her seamlessly by Abbot. She is stubborn, but she lets him.

You have three new messages. First message, from 4:12 AM.
Hey Samira, I’m gonna just keep calling until I’ve spoken to you or you show up in the Pitt, but uh… you gotta come get your boy. He’s f-fine, just a little concussion, it may or may not be my fault—I didn’t start the fight, but I sure didn’t de-escalate it, you know? Anyway, Abbot saved my ass from getting murked in Chairs and uh. It’s not great. Love you, bye!
Second message, from 4:18 AM.
Hey Samira, he’s specifically asked me to stop calling you, but I’m more afraid of you than I’m afraid of him, because you’ll be disappointed in me and that’s worse—

Summary
“And listen,” he continues, and she can watch the part of his brain prone to nervous rambling switch on. “I know the popular opinion is against my general sanity but—I swear to god, I wanna marry you Samira Mohan. And you can say no, and I’m still gonna spend the rest of my life in love with you.”
“Until your other leg falls off,” she repeats, a little distantly.
Jack nods solemnly. “The chance is slim but never zero.”

“What the hell are you doing here?” Abbot asked. He nodded for her to continue walking
“A physician walking into a hospital just before shift change,” She watched as a grin spread across his face. “It’s a riddle no one has been able to crack.”
“You’re finally working nights?”
“I switched with Ellis,” She said. “So, you’re stuck with me for the next three days.” Her steps faltered. “Finally?”
“Are you serious? I’ve been trying to poach you from day shift since PittFest.”
“Really?”
“Really.” His response was almost instant. “You were incredible. The IO borehole, the pigtail catheter; I’m going to be talking about that for the rest of my life. Of course I want you for night shift.”

"The long and short of it is, they want me over there for a couple months to teach a seminar.”
The kitchen is suddenly too quiet.
In the pan behind him mushrooms and onions sizzle, in the living room Santana plays softly over the speaker set they invested in, but all Robby can hear is the beat of his own heart between his ears.
Jack would be gone for months.
He hasn’t spent more than a handful of days without Jack in years.

Summary
She’s never really done the ‘dating’ thing. It’d just never been on her radar. Not something she spared even a second of thought. Where’d she have the time, really? She had a dozen other things going on; a dozen goals that wouldn’t achieve themselves.
In hindsight, that was more important than she realized. Because Samira really hadn’t dated, or cared to date, or thought about dating. So, Samira didn’t know that she had been dating. Technically, at least.
The realization comes slowly.

Summary
The mark on Dr. Mohan’s inner bicep is light tan, a few shades lighter than her skin and it’s familiar. A shape that should be a four leaf clover but is slightly wonky with one more tiny deformed leaf. He’s seen fingers rub over that mark a thousand times. Like it’s a talisman or a genie lamp. He’s heard a gravely voice complain that it’s freckle colored on a body already covered in freckles.
