Apostle Solis has already accepted the nature of his transient existence, a glorified one-time revival for his Saint of the same name, but until then, he is a teacher and he means to do the best he can for as long as possible. After all, his situation is what it is.
River Zhang has thrown his lot in with the questionable motives of the space-dwelling Church of Night Divine, hoping to focus on finding some kind of happiness for himself away from the ordinary struggles of society. He does not expect to become utterly smitten with Apostle Solis, whose good nature and whimsy belie the deep belief that his terrible existence is worth neither loving nor lamenting.
But Solis has work to do, and he's not about to let himself be tangled up in the nuance of deciding whether or not he matters for anything else. And if he happens to form attachments that cause problems for him down the line... well, he can always lie to himself about that, too.
