“It’s just-” he hesitates, his jaw tightening as his eyes drop for a second. “I think he’s not for you.”
“Because he’s too good for me?”
“No.” His gaze snaps back to yours. Something shifts in his expression, something darker, more deliberate. “On the contrary.”
“What does that even mean?” A humourless laugh slips from your lips. “Seriously, Abbot. If your proper son, the one you raised, the younger version of you, is not good enough for me…” You take a step closer, your eyes narrowing. “Who is?”
He says nothing. His eyes stay fixed on yours as though he expects you to find the answer somewhere in them. And that answer, the one written all over his eyes, is forbidden.
