That tightrope he'd thought he'd escaped is a tripwire now, a thick metal cord pressed up against his shins just waiting for him to try and step forward. Heat itches at the back of his eyes.
Akechi returning was supposed to fix all this. Instead Akira feels like he might fall apart at any moment. Which would be bad. Like, really bad. He can't do that in front of Akechi of all people. What would that even look like? What would Akechi think?
"What are you even doing here?" Akira asks, and it sounds like an accusation.
Five minutes ago it wouldn't have. It would have been happy. Excited. A question brimming with more.
"Wasting my time, apparently." Akechi's answer is not the same as it would have been then either. "Coming here was a mistake."
Or
After their reunion goes sideways, Akira and Akechi are trapped inside a palace of their own making. To get out they each must confront hard truths about themselves, and figure out just who they are to each other now that revenge, gods, and the universe are out of the way.

He’s watched Akechi stand in line for some random social media viral dessert-of-the-week at Yon Germain only to subsequently take what looks like 50 different pictures of it, consider each one carefully before selecting one for his stupid food blog (Akira follows it, of course), take one bite from it, then subsequently walk one block down (so no one is around to see it), and throw the damn thing in the trash.
This guy is insufferable.

I'm not. Ren has to force the thought out; the water seems to have made its way into his brain, dissolving it bit by bit like rice paper. Not if it means I get to be with you.

Akira is flailing, fingers curled into claws that reach for but just barely connect with Goro’s mask. “I can… handle this—my… self…,” he whines, the ailment dissolving again and a weak, determined desperation flooding the gaps. Goro’s thumbs shift sideways to haul him up and slam him back into the ground. He’s yelling, now, and it’s lilting into something just as desperate, almost as afraid.
“Stop. You’re killing yourself. You can’t suppress this amount of—”
“—I’m gonna kill you.”
An unstoppable force meets a second unstoppable force.
