Lestat’s face is blank of everything, but his dark eyes latch on Louis’ own, locked as tightly as a prisoner’s chain. “You left me.”
Louis swallows. “I shoulda left you decades ago.”

"I'm not marrying Wynn," said Ilya.
Shane looked at him, trying to keep his temper in check. He hated when people refused to deal with obvious problems that had obvious solutions. "If not Svetlana or Wynn, then who?"
"If is so simple, Hollander, then why not you?"
"Would that be an option?" asked Shane.
Ilya's face went blank. He seemed to freeze on the spot, like a video that paused an unexpected moment. Shane's heart hammered in his chest as Ilya stared ahead, unseeing. He began to blink and roll his neck, like he was a faulty computer that was rebooting.
"Would that be an option?" Shane repeated, slowly.
"Shane," said Ilya. More like pleaded. "Why are you doing this?"
"I'm trying to make sure you don't end up freezing in an anti-gay prison," said Shane. "Marrying someone from a non-crazy country--or at least one less crazy than yours--would be the most efficient move."
"And you would be the one to marry me?"
"Yes," Shane forced himself to say. If Ilya refused with both Svetlana (his favorite girl) and Wynn (his baby), then why would he want Shane? But Shane had to try.
"And your parents would be okay with this?"
"They will be once I explain that I love you--that's not the reason, obviously!" Shane added when Ilya reared back. "We're doing it to get you out of Russia and into Canada, which might get complicated since I don't think you automatically become a Canadian citizen by marrying a Canadian." But still, he was a better option the Svetlana. Canada might be more difficult to get into than the USA, but it was also better. Everyone knew this. "My mom can help us with that; I told you she's a lawyer."
"What would you get out of it?" asked Ilya.
"What do you mean?" said Shane.
"What do you get out of marrying me for papers?"
"I would get you," said Shane. Wasn't it obvious?
Maybe not because Ilya froze again, though for less time now. His face twisted into a strange, confused grimace. "You already have all you want of me."
"No, I don't." This had to be some kind of language barrier issue. Or just an issue with whatever freak out had prompted Ilya to drive all the way from Toronto, or fly in from Boston, when he had a playoff game tomorrow. "I don't. Russia could take you any moment."
"Okay, then I can ask Sveta again--"
"--no!" Shane wasn't going to ask when Ilya had asked Svetlana in the first place. "I thought about it more and Canada is better than the USA. American psychos are currently turning that country into even more of a shithole than it already was. And Finland is too close to Russia. Finland borders Russia. It has to be me."
"Shane, you don't have to do this," Ilya said, looking confused.
"I know I don't have to," said Shane. "I want to."

“Worst case scenario,” the top of the slide read Team rejects Captain. “Players and coach have a significant adverse reaction to me coming out. Individual PDOs fall by an average of two point four, overall winrate decreases by almost six points, and championship chances are down about the same percentage.”
Clicking onward to Team tolerates Captain “Most players stay neutral, mitigating the impact of dissenting actors. Performance is largely undisturbed, so the multipliers remain conservative. PDOs are stable around plus or minus point five, expected wins are business as usual, and we see a more typical playoffs projection at around two percent baseline.”
“Yep yep,” Theriault rubbed his hands together. “Show me the money.”
Shane turned to the next slide with a tiny grin: Team accepts Captain. “Ideal state sees all players, coach included, rallying around their captain. Complete alignment allows for optimal covariated relationships and maximized multipliers. Individual PDOs spike by two point eight on average, while team PDO is projected at one hundred and four. Expected goal multiplier goes up about seven percent, pushing winrates into the double digits, and bring us to an all-time-high championship probability of near fifteen percent.”
He came up for air. “Which sounds crazy,” and Shane couldn’t help his excitement at the possibility. “But the math checks out. It was peer reviewed by the smartest person I know.”
“Jesus, I believe it,” Theriault’s tone was fully impressed, making Shane swell with pride. He’d always appreciated that his coach shared his fetish for good statistics. “I think I need a cigarette.”
Shane got him another Melona instead, and the middle-aged man tore into it with gusto.
“Your methodology’s solid,” Theriault muttered between munches and stroked an imaginary beard, a habit Shane secretly found hilarious. “That’s an extremely compelling forecast you’ve got there.”
“I’ll email it to you, sir,” Shane confirmed. “So we’ll both have it.”
“Yeah, sure,” Theriault waved his popsicle like a commander’s baton. “Empirical evidence aside, how do you plan to execute, Hollander? You’ve gotta convince some real stubborn shitheads, and I’m saying that only partly as a term of endearment.”
Shane scratched the back of his neck. Truthfully, he hadn’t felt the need to overengineer the next part. “I figured I’d get catering. And, um, just—talk to them?”
Theriault said nothing, simply kept chewing judgmentally. Shane didn’t back down.
“If it was anyone else, I’d say it’s dubious,” his coach finally determined. “But you’ve got a way with words, Hollander.”
He swiveled Shane’s laptop back toward him. “Alright, I’m sold. Fifteen fuckin’ percent, I’d like to see it. Get me another Cup, son. Hell, get me two, and maybe I’ll even try swinging that way.”
A shocked laugh spilled from Shane. “I—what? Coach!”
“Hey, I’m just saying,” the older man put his hands up, mock-defensive. “Between you and Scott Hunter, the proportion of Cup-winning teams with gay captains recently—maybe something’s in the water over there!”
Shane shook his head in bewilderment; that wasn’t even including Rozanov. “Correlation is not causation, sir,” he reminded cheekily.
“Right, right,” Theriault quickly polished off his second helping. Then, he offered a smile. It was such an unexpected kindness that Shane stalled, suddenly so intensely grateful for the chance he’d been given, he couldn’t speak. Again, Theriault unstuck him.
“You let me know how I can support, Hollander. A lot’s riding on this,” he extended a hand.
Shane shook it. “I will, Coach. Thank you.”
“Ah, kid,” the crow’s feet around Theriault’s eyes crinkled some more. “What’d you expect?”

Summary
The fight on Boxing Day 2020 end with Ilya asking Shane for a break and Shane walking out the door. Ilya never thought that will be the last time he saw Shane, for a very long time. During this time, everyone Shane loved struggle to cope with the grief, some better than others. Ilya stays in Ottawa and watches over Yuna and David Hollander, grieving their only son, and each in their own, do not survive it. Hayden searches for answers in the wreckage of his best friend's disappearance, turning over events in memory, unable to shake the feeling Shane told him something before he vanished.
When Shane finally reappears, enduring the unthinkable, broken and barely recognizable, what comes next is harder than anyone anticipated.Or: AU after the Boxing Day fight in The Long Game. It's a story of grief, found family, a love that withstands hardship and passage of time, and the most unlikely friendship. Recovery is slow and costly and nonlinear, but that's what makes the happy ending hard won. Major Character Death warning are not for Shane or Ilya.
Complete, sequel updating.

The first time David called him by Shane's name, Ilya had been in the kitchen making tea. David had called from the living room, clearly and with certainty, the name of someone he expected to answer. Ilya had stood in the kitchen for a moment, then walked to the living room with the two cups of tea and looked at David, who was looking at him with an expression of complete recognition, recognition of the wrong person.
“Shane,” David said. “Come sit with me.”
Ilya set the cups down on the side table and sat on the sofa beside him, close enough that David could reach him. “I'm here,” he said. He did not say whose name. He did not correct, just offered his presence as the answer to whatever David needed. “Dad, I'm right here.”
