“Oh, Giyuu,” she says. Her eyes widen. The purple in her irises—such pretty irises; the last thing he wants to see before he dies—softens. She knows what she has to do.

Does he think he’s close enough to her to treat her like this? Or does he care so little it doesn’t matter? And is that admiration in his voice or is he just matter-of-fact as always; is there nothing beneath his hard-shelled exterior, nothing viscous and soft she could plunge her hand in if she cracked him?
He walks away, leaving her dazed, frying in the burning sun.

Sometimes she wonders why she even likes him, is almost supernaturally compelled to sit closest to him whenever they do not have a preordained order. To sit farthest from him sometimes, because she thinks she can’t resist touching him, reaching a hand out, tactile as she is. Sometimes she wonders why she spends every free waking moment she has, of which there are precious few these days, with him. Often she wonders why he lets her. But he intrigues her so much, so she keeps pushing.
