    “Oh, it’s a way for humans to tell each other they’re taken. To remember,” I say, popping a bunch more gummy bears into my mouth. Rocky makes a disgusted sound and I smile as I chew. “It’s just a nice way of showing they have someone they committed to.”

    Rocky freezes. I don’t notice for a good few seconds, not until I get the pressing sensation that he’s staring at me, his lack of eyes irrelevant.

    I turn to face him. He’s jittering, something like shaking from excitement or anger, I’m not sure.

    “Rocky?” I ask.

    “Grace have ring,” he points, and oh no. “Grace have mate? Why Grace no say!?”

    I hold up my hands before he can get too excited, though I can already hear a familiar sound, a repeating joyful and confused song start to escape from him.

    “No, no, no!” he freezes again. Deflates, a little. I sigh and run a hand down my face. “It’s… complicated.”

    Grace and Rocky had solved the Astrophage problem, and were less than six months away from reaching Erid. That was the good news.

    The bad news? They just passed through some sort of wormhole that came out of nowhere, and now Grace is physically and mentally much younger than he was before.

    To an Eridian, a difference of thirty years is nothing. To a human? It’s the difference between being a doctor and being a second grader.

    Good thing Rocky, the number-one human expert, is here. Hopefully whatever that wormhole did wears off eventually, but if not? Well, he and Adrian did always want to start a family someday…

    “Use you?” Adrian sings incredulously, tapping the floor twice in unmistakable question. “Elaborate. What do you mean, use you?”

    All life on Earth evolved, in the beginning, from aquatic life forms. To many, the call to return to the ocean is instinctual, a feeling deep in their bones that goes far beyond any rational reasoning. To float amongst the waves, to kick and splash until it feels as though you were always part of the water, is to be entirely free.

    Grace gets access to an ocean, and immediately forgets everything else he's supposed to be doing.
    Rocky is not as thrilled by this.
