Siuan Sanche is the only Accepted present when Gitara Moroso has a Foretelling of the Dragon's rebirth and after a series of all too convenient deaths, is left the only Aes Sedai searching for the child. Fearing pursuit by the Black Ajah, Siuan stays in the slums of Canluum when an unexpected appearance from an old pillow friend saves her life. Moiraine Damodred is not quite the person she remembers, but Siuan hopes she can be trusted enough to guard her back.

“The Groomer would tell her of the comings and goings of a marriage bed. He would present anatomical diagrams hand-painted by some sullen scribe, and he would describe without a flicker of warmth or shame the expectations of her future lord and husband. She would be instructed to submit, to acquiesce, to ensure that her own enjoyment (if there even was such a thing) was neither required nor desired. The details would be recited in a voice utterly devoid of life, as if he were reading from a manual on livestock diseases rather than the last vestiges of her stolen girlhood.
And Moiraine, who had never truly known a touch that didn’t hold some transactional purpose, would listen, counting her breaths to avoid nausea, counting seconds to avoid tears. She could already feel tomorrow’s shame prickling beneath her skin; could already sense herself shrinking, becoming lighter and emptier… on the verge of evaporation.”
