    Summary

“Why,” he asks slowly, “did you put your gun down, Rosinante?” His voice carries, barely a whisper, over the cold-numb-ache settling into his chest.

His stupid, sweet little brother laughs at him. It’s a painful sound; neither of his lungs sound punctured, but a bullet lodged in the abdominal muscles makes breathing difficult, Doflamingo presumes. “Because you’re my brother,” he says. “I’m not killing my own family. Not for the Marines, not for myself, not for Law.”

So he lowers the gun. So he takes a step forward. Rosinante’s eyes, red-brown like hours-old blood, deeper than the shade of his own, almost… soften. Just at the edges. Like he has some hope; like underneath everything, he hopes Doflamingo takes him home.

    He never gets the chance.

The last thing he remembers clearly is reducing that young Marine to a pile of sliced viscera, red arterial spray staining his coat and the snow beneath.

    Summary

Predictably, Baby 5 is nowhere in sight. Despite Doflamingo's reassurance, Crocodile has his doubts that the bird's daughter will return after what he did.

And so he waits as the crimsons of late afternoon bruise the clouds with a cool-toned twilight, haloing the new moon like a black eye. The inhabitants of the Dressrosan palace busy themselves with arbitrary chaos, the aimless buzzing of a beehive missing its queen.

Crocodile is so used to the Family's antics that he doesn’t even think much of the gunshot. It's only when it's long past sunset and Doflamingo remains conspicuously absent that he realizes its lack of an echo means something might have been actually hit.

    Or more concerningly, someone.

    > Crocodile supposes he does. He sets his wrist atop his knee, ash spiraling from the glowing end of his cigar onto his dress shoes. "She’s going to betray you someday."
    > Doflamingo leans towards the mirror, tongue poking out between his teeth in concentration. "Mm…probably."

An engineer, an archaeologist, and a surgeon walk into a bar, …no wait.

Ok so, a self-built cyborg and two paramecia devil fruit users walk into a bar, …

Let’s start again. There’s no bar. Two pirates in love meet another pirate who has macabre body horror powers and intellectual interests that align with their own, so they invite him to a have a macabre, nerdy threesome. The punchline is that Law still thinks he’s convincing anyone he’s not friends with the Strawhats.

Imagine, Sylvanas thinks, how merciful my death would've been had a Lich Queen been chosen over a King. Jaina Proudmoore has no need of a Banshee. I would have been slain cleanly, as would all of Azeroth. Efficiently.

"A marriage of state," says Jaina. "A mutual surrender for a mutual victory."
