Summary
Something flickers underneath the surface of his skin — spiky, spiny, angry lines batter against him like they're cased in cling wrap and she thumbs over everything, hoping like all hell it will calm down. That he will calm down.
She thinks of John when they were younger, freshly in love and just engaged, drowning in excess passion with nowhere to put it. She thinks of young John, not-a-detective-yet John, field-agent John, coming home with scratches and bruises and once even a gunshot wound, patched haphazardly by medical. She thinks about hurt and pain and scarring.
Will Matt's hurt ever scar? Will his pain ever calcify and harden into something tangible? Or will he be forced to endure it, under the surface, rippling and secret and healing.
