Wake up at six, take his suppressants with a mediocre bowl of cereal, review his lecture notes over his coffee, teach his classes, spend afternoons in the lab or his office working, and go home. Rinse and repeat. It was predictable, safe, and exactly what he needed. He should’ve known it wasn’t meant to last.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
“An astronaut! I’m going to fly into space one day!” Colton declared in all his five-year-old authority. “I’ll fly to the moon and look down at the entire Earth and see everything!”
“You can’t look ‘down’ at Earth,” Ryland huffed. “There is no up or down in space.”
“Whatever. You’ll come, too, won’t you Ry?”
“No way, Colt. You’re the crazy one. I’ll just do the math for you to go to space.”
“Deal!”
Except, of course things don’t go that way. Ryland is the one that gets sent into space, leaving Colt behind on a cold and starving world. Ryland wakes up alone on a spaceship light years away from Earth, wondering why his face reminds him of someone else. Colt looks up towards the stars every day, wishing and wondering if he will ever get to see his brother again.In other words, the Coltland twins AU has consumed me and I had to write my piece about them, of them growing up over the years before being forced apart by their doomed narrative.
