That was his first thought as he landed in water instead of flames and rubble, Eddie’s screams fading out as Buck fell into a pool hard enough to hit the bottom.
Buck hadn’t closed his eyes, he hadn’t thought to hold his breath, convinced he was about to die from a six floor drop, not land in a pool in the building’s basement, in the one tiny section that hadn’t yet been filled with pieces of the hotel crumbling around them.
Buck inhaled some of the ashy water as his body spurred him into motion, evidently getting over the certainty of his death before Buck consciously had as he swam back up on instinct.
