"Many stages in Eridian reproductive process. Rocky Adrian laying cycles finally sync up recently. So, Rocky Adrian think finally time for eggs. Adrian lay five eggs, very good. Only, strange thing happen. Rocky only lay one egg."
“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”
"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

Ryland Grace has been adrift for a very long time (certainly before being shot into space). Rocky has built him a house, and maybe Grace has found a home.

Grace scoffs at him, but offers no argument. Like Rocky said: Mouth much better for kissing. He leans in to press his open mouth wetly over a set of auricles. There's a clear edge of disgust in Rocky's warbled trill, thrumming louder as Grace's tongue rasps against the xenonite.Quivering, Rocky vocalizes his revulsion loudly. Grace huffs a smug sound directly into the array of holes, chuckling as he shifts to kiss Rocky's shoulder joint. The mesh flexes enough for Grace to lick into the seam of it as he digs his nails into the shoulder opposite, sending Rocky into a racket of buzzing churrs. It's a delightfully sensitive area, thick carapace giving way to skin flexible enough to shift and twist. Human fingers are quite adept at sneaking into small spaces, and Rocky is always particularly weak under the wet, cold press of Grace's tongue.

Summary
“Need word,” Rocky says in baby-talk Eridian for me. The translator dutifully repeats “need word” in English a second later.
After fifteen minutes of bewildering back and forth between the three of us, we determine the word he needs is “declension.”
A year into the journey to Erid, Grace faces down his most formidable academic gauntlet since astrophage: the five-part polyphonic Eridian language. It’s only fair after Rocky mastered English, human mannerisms, Grace mannerisms- without so much as one complaint. And if learning Eridian might temper some of Grace’s desperate, near-complete dependence on Rocky in the future… well. That’s his own business.
Eridian breaks Grace’s brain, heart, and soul- and puts it back together.

Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.
