    Luffy didn't know how to react to the fact that he was sleeping in the woods after finishing his training with Rayleigh for the day and in a moment he wasn't.

    “Hey! You! With the Straw Hat!”

    Luffy looked curiously at the guy who looked about his age.

    The guy smiled broadly at him and Luffy's chest tightened for some reason he didn't know, pointing his finger at him, he said, "We have matching hats! Isn't that amazing- Hey!" His smile unreasonably widened, “Join my crew!”

    "Roger, you can't just invite some random guy into our crew just because he has a hat that looks like your dirty one."

    "Oi Rayleigh! Just because you're my buddy doesn't mean you can say things like that to my precious hat! apologize immediately!"

    How can Luffy interact with a man who everything about him reminds him of his dear brother who passed away months ago?

    The stuff on his fingers and on his chin drips down onto his leg and it makes a sound like plinkplinkplink and everywhere it lands there is a small explosion of light.

    Tiny fireworks.

    He shakes his head and more drops hit the ground and it makes his head spin and somewhere deep down a high pitched voice tells him to stop, to not make it worse, but there are such pretty fireworks all around him now and the fish stop swimming and look down at him and he raises his arms and tells them to come down, come down, watch the fireworks with me!

    But the fish only stare, swimming in place, their fins going back and forth and forth and back.

    Boring fish.

    Rocinante had rehearsed what he would say to Law, when they finally caught up with his new crew. He’d gone through scenario after scenario, an old habit borne of Sengoku’s coaching to first combat his paralyzing childhood anxiety and later to survive among his brother’s crew.

    None of the scenarios he’d prepared for had involved a lanky youth in a hat taking one look at him and going white. “Shit!” he blurted, scrambling to his feet.

    They had also never involved his redheaded companion throwing the wrench in his hand directly at Rocinante’s head. “Take that, you feathered FUCK!”

    Luffy has a strange definition of a "first mate".

    Apparently, the rubber man thinks that to choose a first mate is to choose someone as your spouse. The revelation throws Zoro off, but ultimately he goes along with it. After all, he'd already dedicated himself to this new crew and the boy who declared himself pirate king. Might as well go the full mile and become his husband too. So he becomes Zoro, the First Mate and Luffy's husband. It feels so obvious.

    Unfortunately, both Captain and First Mate neglect to inform the rest of their merry crew exactly what being "first mate" means. When the couple finally reunites after 2 long years apart, they shock the rest of their crew members with their... enthusiastic greeting.
