    Summary

"Oh," Simon thought - and now he knew for certain that he was dying, because there were stars in the sky.
Millions of them. More than he could count, stretching across the sky in thick bands; lush swirls of white and blue and purple and green. They were so bright. They were so beautiful. And they had been waiting here for him all this time.
    That was nice.

    -

Several years after arriving on Erid, Ryland Grace and Rocky were supposed to be done saving the world(s). But the moment they head back out into space, the universe keeps dropping the most irresistible mysteries into their laps: most recently, a man who claims to have crawled from an ocean of blood.

Simon had been prepared to die, he really had - but somehow, he's found himself in the hands of what may be the last beings in the world who aren't willing to let him. But it can never be so simple; his past, his world, and whatever he brought with him into this new one, will not let him go so easily.

    Summary

Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.

    He chose the worst one.

“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”

    The man went completely still.

Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.

“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

    -:-:-

Ryland Grace is brilliant with biology, awkward with adults, and far too invested in giving his students the lessons they deserve. Simon Fleischer is a guarded florist who trusts plants more than people and has no interest in being needed by anyone again. But when a forgotten school lab brings Ryland into Root & Thorn, their lives begin to tangle in quiet, unexpected ways – through flowers, roots, and the terrifying possibility of being cared for properly.

    Summary

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.

Right up until Rocky asks another question.

“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”

Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”

Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.

“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”

I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.

“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”

I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.

    “Grace. When last time, question.”

I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.

“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”

    I can taste grass.
