Summary
Many perished in the battle of the five armies but one stood above all else. One of the company of Thorin Oakenshield had fallen, one that had been marked a traitor only to be proven the strongest and bravest of them all. Stricken with grief and pain, Thorin disregards the potential backlash for laying a non-dwarf to rest in Erebor and gives Bilbo an honorable dwarven funeral.
However, when horror struck, it rattled the very stone around them. Everyone thinks that it is the result of divine retribution...but Mahal truly does love his wife and her beloved children.

If he pulled his sword aside and let Azog’s blade pierce his chest, Thorin could take what seconds battle-haze and fury gave him and strike true with his sword. If that was what it took to finally kill Azog, then Thorin would gladly trade Azog’s death for his life—
And then Thorin remembered that it was not only his life that he would be trading.
If he died here to Azog’s blade, Bilbo would die, too.
Hobbits, like dwarves, have soul mates. Unlike dwarves, however, when one person in a soul bond dies, so do the others.

Bilbo’s heart, racing as it had been from this thrilling invitation, seemed to trip over itself at the name. “Thorin?” he whispered, and he stepped forward without thinking.

Summary
Erebor was reclaimed, everybody lived, Thorin was reunited with the nephews he thought were lost, and Bilbo chose to stay in the mountain as Thorin’s “assistant” rather than return to the Shire.
Bilbo has settled into what he's sure will be many years of peace and homely comforts with Thorin, until a brutal war with a resurgent Sauron claims the lives of the king and both his heirs. The new king Dain returns alive from the last battle and begins to reshape the court of Erebor to suit his own purposes. Overlooked and underestimated, Bilbo is left to ask himself the big questions, like whether he still has a place in the Lonely Mountain.
And also, questions like: isn’t it awfully convenient for Dain, that everyone ahead of him in line for the throne died in the same battle?
And also: where are their bodies?
A story where Bilbo is basically The Constant Gardener, Dain is basically Richard III, and the descendants of Durin may be harder to kill than in canon.
