Summary
Simon stares at his reflection in the dirty, cracked bathroom mirror. A red eye stares back, shining unnaturally in the bathroom light. On the other side, the staples he used to close up the skin of where his other eye socket once was glint. Not that there's actually much of a socket left for the eye they did leave him with; it's really just a big hole in the skin itself. You can see part of his new metal skull through it.

Summary
When I was a kid, I had a night light. It was a simple circle that glowed a soft, warm orange. It’d fight the darkness off, only to cast looming shadows on the walls. I remember thinking, once, that one of them was a line of ants crawling up the wall. It was actually just a dark reflection of one of the support beams for a shelf in my closet. Stationary. Ordinary. But there, in the light of that little bulb, it looked like it was moving; that the dark shape was many little ones, all unified in reaching some goal.
It’s kinda funny. Night lights really aren’t that helpful. They might carve out the darkness, but more of it is always there. Inescapable.

Summary
She stares at me for a moment. Then, she lets the door shut behind her as she steps outside properly. Crossing her arms, her eyebrows shift slightly, and her frown gets softer. Oh great.
“Is something going on?”
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I mutter, “Jesus Christ.”

Summary
Outside of the whistling of the wind, the creaking of the branches overhead, my crunching footsteps, and the sounds of the occasional animal running or flying off when I pass, it’s silent. It’s...weird. How quiet it is out here. The woods aren’t quiet. It’s one of those things that’s funny to me, when city folks who haven’t been out in the wilderness much bring up how loud the city is and how peaceful the country must be. They’ve never heard the crickets chirping loud enough to make you think one’s right next to you. Never had to listen to the incessant buzzing of cicadas.
...Why’s it so quiet?
I stop walking for a moment, brow furrowing. The crunching continues for another moment despite that.
Eyes widening, I tense up. I hold my breath and listen.

Summary
He’s covered in roach guts. Glowing roach guts, wonderful. They smell terrible, and Ryland can’t even bathe, ugh. But the poor thing was slowly freezing to death. He couldn’t just…
Grace sighs and stands, wincing at the squish of the mess around him. He shakes the mess off his hands. Lesson learned. They dealt with radroaches in the Vault differently. Maybe he should take a page out of their book and just shoot them on sight.
That reminds him. He needs to go through his pack.
The sofa’s too rotted out to hold Grace’s weight, so he scrapes off the worst of the roach gore (ew ew ew ew), unstraps his back and lets it flop to the filthy ground. Cheese and crackers, that thing was heavy! At least they weren’t sending him out without provisions.

Summary
He’s not much of a talker, Grace has quickly discerned, the words he does share are spoken gruffly but quietly, even the gratuitous swearing. More habit than actually irate. Still, Grace is just wondering how to fill the silence without just rambling when Simon cautiously ventures, “Say I’m not dead. Say it is real… why rescue me? Why fix me up?”
He tilts his head, nonplussed, “Because you were stranded and you were hurt.”
“That’s not what I’m asking,” spoken through gritted teeth. “At least, at least be honest with me. For what reason? What do you want in return?”
In his lap, Grace’s fingers flex.
“I don’t want anything in return,” he says steadily.
(A bloodymary fix-it fic with extra emphasis on touch starvation, and boy is Grace ravenous.)

Summary
“I called it the Good Luck quilt,” Grace says. “It’s all symbols of luck from across the world, it was a parting gift before the mission - but let’s not get into all that. It’s silly but it’s comforted me through some pretty hard times. I thought…I don’t know. I’m probably just being sentimental.”
Simon grasps the edge of the quilt that he can reach, if only to make sure it’s real. It’s beautiful. There’s not a lot of color left in the world, and colorful, soft fabric of this quality is worth a fortune. The patterns are joyful, almost childish. For some reason that Simon can’t quite articulate through the sickness and exhaustion, it makes him suddenly very certain that this isn’t the COI.
In Simon’s old universe, fabric, thread, and yarn are all precious commodities. He's had to learn to mend clothes and knit socks out of practicality. On Erid, it's a way to pay back what he owes, to make friends, and eventually, to heal.
A love letter fiber crafts and the people who do them, an exploration of physical disability, and of course, a very soft love story.Bookmarked by oceanbottom

Summary
He and Rocky have just finished a knock-down, blow-out fight – the kind of argument where both parties storm off in a huff and refuse to answer when the other calls until they cool off – when the mangled man washes up on the biodome beach, and Grace will never forgive himself for that.
