Summary
The thing is, when Buck was very young and very lonely, he had attached the same wish to every lopsided, dollar-store candle balanced carefully on a cupcake for two and every penny tossed into a fountain at Maddie’s behest: that whoever was listening would give him a best friend. Someone who wasn’t his older sister, someone who’d like him the best in the world, someone who’d always laugh at his jokes and find him in a crowded room. Someone who’ll always be happy to see him, no matter what.
Five times Buck or Eddie almost confessed they were in love with the other, and the one time they told each other at the same time.

Summary
The harrowing, sinking feeling in his chest nearly chokes Daniel as it comes up. Even with his memories clipped and sutured together, he knows it to be untrue even as he asks, “And I ran?”
“Oh, Daniel.” He thinks he understands now, why Daniel had looked at him the way he did when Louis walked away from him that last time, smug and conceited, like he was the emperor of the world simply by virtue of having torn through all the wear and tear on Armand’s safety blanket. He could tear into this memory with his teeth, let the blood of its corpse seep into his mouth, and it still wouldn’t be enough to make up for bearing the burden of being the only one who remembers. “You didn’t. You never do. That’s your curse.”
Armand, and the poison of his own blood.
