Summary
Nobody knows the entirety of what they stand to lose, until they’re reeling from the loss. Tallying each thing that’s been taken as if it’s a morning prayer, and living by the doctrine of protecting what remains, as they add another strike to that mental list that grows by the day. Granted, some losses feel insignificant, compared to the ones that feel as if the world was destroyed all over again, thousands of times again each time the deceased’s name is mentioned, or someone smiles too similarly to a once-beloved corpse, each day made worse by someone’s absence, but the little things? Like going on walks unarmed, and unscarred from the threat of death, in memory of all the time he’d spend in the forest by his house as a child: playing pretend and poking at mushrooms growing through decaying bark. Back when an obliviousness to his surroundings he was once allowed, accompanied by that ample peace that extended the whole world as long as he was with his father; but all of that shattered in the matter of a single night, because his father was gone the night the world ended, and maybe that made it all just a bit more painful; as he watched everything collapse.

dazai knows absolution is not easy, nor is it promised. that mere words, regardless of their holiness in the eyes of his lord, will never be enough to absolve someone like the likes of him from the things he has done, that he will continue to do. he can pray all he wants, but he is not of the angels. he will remain in the domain of the devil, until he, himself, ascends from mere prodigy, to the mantle of his birthright, the throne of the unheavenly father, the lord of the underworld, and all things in his keep. dazai was not bred for the kingdom of heaven, as he has spent his entire existence trying to be the cause of it’s fall, but lord, almighty… how he craves to walk heaven’s halls. he will claw and bite, froth at the mouth, for such a privilege, but his blood runs black, and he is dripping in it, courted by death… and in the stillness of the night as he watches the moths flutter round the streetlamp far down the alley, he remembers the echo of cursed fathers and blasphemous mothers, and how they will always breed cursed sons, and knows his wish will never come to fruition.

Summary
Obito arrives a few moments earlier when Rin jumps in front of Kakashi’s chidori. He’s still too late to save her, but he’s in time to watch the sequence of events that makes Kakashi shatter. Instead of returning to Madara, he chooses to live by his own mantra and refuses to abandon his friend in his time of need. Obito returns to Konoha with Kakashi, and this results in just a few unintended consequences. One of them being his insistence that he should be allowed to care for his late sensei’s orphan son, no matter what the Sandaime might say about the matter. He’s not quite sure how Kakashi becoming his unofficial co-parent fits into this, but he’ll figure it out eventually.
