Enter Elphaba Thropp: eldest daughter of the social climbing Munchkin governor. She's educated, of acceptable lineage, and best of all her green skin and rumored magical ability means there will be no questions asked when the newlyweds choose not to be present in court life.
In a fortnight the agreements are signed and the rural mountain manor Kiamo Ko is staffed and prepared for the new owners to take residence. Now, if she times the ceremony just right, nobody will ever have the know about Fiyero's dirty little secret.

Fiyero.
He's dressed in the uniform of all the other guards, except his is adorned with an ornamental cape. For his wedding, she thinks derisively.
She should flee. He is the literal captain of the Emerald City guard. The one tasked with hunting her.
"We'll find that wicked witch" His venom-filled words cut through the forest, and straight through Elphaba's heart where she hides just out of sight.
"Fiyero, even you." she had whispered when she was alone in her hideout, letting only one tear fall before picking her chin up. So be it.
Still, she can't help but linger. She can't stop the hope in her chest that maybe it was just another mask of his, that he meant none of it. It would be the smart thing to do.
Her Fiyero was smart.
It's this realization that leads to her landing on his balcony.
