It was an impolite question, calculated to cause discomfort. Hartley was watching my reaction closely, his dark eyes intense.
There were many things I could’ve said. I owe him my life. He’d protected me not only from the criminals we’d encountered but also from myself. I would have damned my own soul without him. He’s given me a purpose. Out of hopelessness, grief, corruption he’d coaxed light and truth. I love him.
He is a good man, I’d say to Blaney many years later.
But I bit my tongue. None of this was for Hartley to hear.
“I suppose it is simply that I do not wish to always be the smartest man in the room,” I said instead, rather pointedly, and walked away.

My arm hangs limply by my side as Rocky takes my hand into his, examining it closely. He pulls my fingers apart, then wraps his hand around each of them, one after the other.
“What’chu doing, bud?”
He looks up at me, making a noise that I recognize as an idea brewing in his brain. “I will make rings,” he says.
“What?” I ask. And again, as my brain truly catches up with the meaning of what he’s said: “Wait, sorry, what?”
Rocky releases my hand, straightening like a man on a mission. “You say rings mean staying together forever. I make rings for us. So we stay together. Like last-finger-promise.”

Rocky makes a soft sound of surprise, like he hadn't even realized the phrase was unknown to me. His claws click softly as he searches for smaller words. "Sounds very complex, but simple meaning. Means deep, deep care for person. Specific person."
I fight against the weight of fatigue to pry my eyes open. "Love," I whisper after a moment, blinking down at him. "I... I think we'd call that 'love.'"
As the days towards Erid tick downward, Grace finds that there are still endless ways for Rocky to surprise him.

“Ohh,” Grace rubs the back of his neck and kneels to Rocky's level. “That's, really sweet of you Rock, but you don't have to do anything like that if you're not comfortable.”

For a moment I flash back to Earth. Grover Cleveland Middle did a lot of field trips. I took six successive classes of sixth graders to the same natural history museum, planetarium, and, for some reason, the zoo. I learned pretty quickly that even the best-behaved of sixth graders will start bickering on a school bus if they get bored enough. Not to brag, but I got pretty good at interrupting them with either dad jokes, or the sorts of dumb road trip games used by parents everywhere in desperate attempts to keep their kids from being annoying in the car.
"Actually that reminds me of a game we play on Earth sometimes," I blurt out.
