Summary
For eight years, John Marston had lived as if revenge were the only shape grief could take.
It was easier to let anger fill the space where his heart used to be: to ride, fight, and move forward without stopping long enough to remember what he had lost.
Eight years ago, beneath a blazing sunrise, John lost someone he loved and never had the chance to say goodbye to. Perhaps that was why revenge had been so easy to hold onto: as long as he kept moving, he never had to look back.
Now, riding toward Strawberry with Charles and Sadie, John feels the past beginning to catch up with him. Memories he had buried for years resurface, forcing him to confront the one thing he has never been able to outrun: the life he might have had.
What if they had been given more time? What if things had been different? What if, for once, John had been allowed to choose something other than survival?
