Summary
Jack learns about Andrew in fits both fast and slow: a dump of stories told across the kitchen table at nine in the morning over just the leftover flakes of croissants, or unintentionally catching the last clipped sentences of a phone call to someone named Amy. Andrew protects his weak spots with bloody fists but there's a soreness in his eyes that Jack identifies as a yearning to not have to at all.
Jack relays what he learns to Robby in shared moments as they walk to PTMC before sunrise or in low tones over spaghetti and meatballs at Mama Rosa's Italian Kitchen. Andrew's story doesn't seem like one that should be told under the joyful gaze of the sun. It doesn't seem like the kind of story that anyone could rightly survive.
Andrew moves in, Robby is hunted for sport, and Jack gets an A+ in therapy.

Jack tips his head back and glugs down half a water bottle in one go, wipes his chin with the back of his wrist. "What the hell do you do with a brother at fifty? What do I even have in common with this guy other than blood?”
“Is he on the run from the cops, or from someone else?”
“Apparently he thinks he’s presumed dead. So getting him a job might cause some problems.” He looks over at Robby. “Is this my problem? How is this my problem?”
It takes Robby a while to answer. “I don’t know that it is. But you don't have to decide today."
Andrew Cody flees California. Jack Abbot focuses on the medicine. Michael Robinavitch maintains equilibrium.

Dana shakes her head. "It's his normal shift. I think he's here to work."
"The hell he is." Robby pushes off from the desk.
Jack's wife dies on a Monday. He shows up to work on Wednesday.

Robby holds his breath to match. They lay there together, minutes passing, until Jack tips his head from the pillow and finds Robby watching him.
"Was I dreaming?" He plucks at his sleep shirt. "I'm damp."
"Yeah, man. How do you feel?" Robby bites his lip, burying the smile the tries to climb to the surface.
Jack contemplates the question as he licks his lips. Robby watches him flex his muscles, continue to orient himself. "Hungry," he decides, confused. Keen green eyes examine Robby. "Are you okay?"
Jack finds his way.

It isn't long before Lieutenant Montgomery Adamson knocks on the door of Robby's clinic. The gleam of his uniform is intimidating, helped along by the sword belted to his hip. Robby shows him into the front room, already shaking his head.
"How many times do I have to decline, sir?" Robby walks directly to the liquor cabinet. It's two in the afternoon, and he has a patient waiting to be seen. To hell with it; Mr. Harris complains once a week with persistent external piles. He can wait. Robby pulls a bottle of bourbon from the top shelf and, after a beat of hesitation, a singular glass.
Adamson ignores his question. "A short stint. One, two years tops. We need proper physicians out there, Robby. Ones we can trust. Talented, quick on the spot. We need you."

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.

The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”
