He’s right, because Mitya shakes his head. “Nothing, Sarge. Anything I start with- that project’s been my life for so long, I don’t even know if I could learn anything new without connecting it back, and I can’t let the Curse of Death affect anyone again. Never again. And it’s not going to help me to revisit old topics-”
An idea comes to Valeriy in that moment.
“Teach me,” Valeriy blurts.
Mitya stops and stares at him. “What?”
“Teach me.” Valeriy repeats. “You said you need to feel as though you’re making progress. That you needed to entertain thought without getting bored, without getting into complicated science that could put Snezhnaya’s people at risk. Would my education be tangible enough?”
Suddenly, he feels very stupid all over again. “Of course, if you’d rather not-”
“No! No, Valeriy, I-” Mitya stops, and corrects himself, and he’s smiling, just a little. “Sarge. Archons, Sarge, I would love to.”
OR: Valeriy, on the topic of duty and naivety; and Mitya, whom he can't ever seem to catch up to.
