---------------Then Rozanov leaned in and Shane felt his breath catch in his throat. They weren't touching but the proximity alone was enough to make Shane's whole nervous system sizzle.
“Can’t you feel it?” Rozanov whispered, his voice rough with desire.
“No,” Shane lied.
“I ache to touch you,” Rozanov almost moaned. His voice was so soft and full of need. Shane could feel his own body respond to it. He knew exactly how Rozanov felt.
But he didn’t want to feel this way about this man. It should have been someone else. Anyone else.
“We are nothing,” Shane said. “Go away, Rozanov.” And then he got into his car and drove away. He didn’t look in the rear view mirror as he left because he did not want to see the look on Rozanov’s face.

Before his mind could process the occurrence, he was suddenly enveloped - caught in the unyielding grip of two powerful arms - unforgivingly tight. He couldn’t see who, he could barely process where and why, but he felt himself shaking and his eyes burning and leaking raindrops on the shoulder of the force who squeezed tighter. Minutes passed, who knows how many, in complete silence other than the gasps coming from Shane as he sobbed. When he felt his heart reach a relatively normal pace, and the drumming in his ears quieted, he felt himself melt for a moment in the arms he still hadn’t recognized until he heard the voice. “Hollander, you are having panic attack.” Shane froze.

Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.

During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open. -

Summary
Shane Hollander has made all the right decisions. Putting hockey above everything, abstaining from cake and lemonade, and never kissing boys, especially Russian boys with crooked grins who always saw right through him. This restraint has secured Shane a legacy as one of the greatest players of all time. Everything he ever wanted, and somehow never enough.
Ilya Rozanov is long dead, lost to fire and water in a plane crash half a century ago. But at the end of his carefully controlled life, Shane can’t stop dreaming about him, haunted by echoes of what might have been.
Given a chance to change the past, Shane has to decide what really matters: hockey, or the only bad decision he was ever tempted to make.
