Gustave Virlogeux has been in love with his best friend for nine years.
Why hasn't he confessed, you ask? Well, there is the tiny, insignificant problem that said best friend is straight.Or at least he thinks he is straight. Because for about a year now, there's been a little voice in the back of Verso Dessendre's head asking some very pointed questions about a certain engineering student, who also happens to be his best friend.
And what better place to figure this mess out than four days at a music festival: with their entire friend group, one (1) very small tent, and a spreadsheet containing thirty-six (36) of Gustave's failed confession attempts?
Or: five times Verso thinks he might be bi, five times Gustave almost confesses, and the one time, finally, nobody interrupts.

Summary
A cozy Verstave Belle Époque Farming Fic.
Verso Dessendre has been exiled from Paris for making one (1) very good joke about his father's cabbage-growing ancestors. His (very unjust and entirely inappropriate) punishment: one year on the neglected family farm outside Lumière, where he is expected to learn the value of honest work and return a better man. Verso intends to suffer with dignity and to complain extravagantly to his sister. Most of all, he intends to return to proper civilization the moment his sentence is served, and not a moment later.
Unfortunately, the villagers insist on making themselves his friends, a rude white dog takes possession of his barn, and Gustave Virlogeux, the unfairly handsome local blacksmith, has an appalling habit of smiling at him as though he might actually belong here.
And somewhere between planting his first peas and playing the village inn's dreadful piano, Verso begins to suspect that leaving in September might be the hardest part of all.
Or: In which a Parisian learns to farm, falls hopelessly in love with a blacksmith, and is continuously betrayed by a pair of yellow wellingtons.

With the Paintress gone, the world saved, and everyone back from the dead, they should have their perfect happy ending. But death has a habit of leaving scars even where it is reversed, new beginnings do not come easy, and no one is entitled to forgiveness.
When he returns from the continent newly alive and with the memory of his last moments ringing in his mind, all Lucien can think of is how he failed to protect Gustave in the end, and how he does not want to fail again. But looking after Gustave has always been a challenge, and it is made no easier by the fact that Maelle has all these memories of another life now, and a new brother, and trouble figuring out her priorities and how they affect those around her.

Summary
Fixing is the modus operandi by which Gustave operates, something comforting - find the problem, think on it, knock heads and ideas around, build the patch, apply the patch, test the patch. The steps fall one after the other with rhythm, cylinders firing inside a well-oiled machine. It's a dance he knows and loves.
The steps are out of order for this song. His great stumble stares back at him, the stump of an arm wrapped in fresh bandaging.
