“She looks a lot like him,” Van murmurs one day, both of them watching Lisa, holding Nat’s phone, squinting at the camera, taking a photo of a pretty flower, tongue poking out from between her teeth. He used to do that when he took pictures, too.
Nat bites the inside of her cheek, ignoring a pang in her chest. She doesn’t miss him. She can’t.
And yet.
Normally, Nat would probably make some quip about her own genes, although Lisa does resemble her quite a bit. It’s something about this moment, this expression. The act of taking a picture the exact same way he used to do it.
“Yeah,” Nat replies, watching her daughter with soft eyes. “She does.”
