Grace was still messing with the settings for one of the wireless game controllers (because of course Stratt had packed three) when Rocky rolled his ball in to settle next to him. The title screen music was endearingly intense, but Rocky’s translator cut through the loud electric guitar melody.
“What Grace doing, question?”
“I’m gonna play a video game! Wanna watch?”
“Yes yes yes! Have heard much about Earth video-games.” Rocky did a little happy dance in his ball, using his brand-new word for “video” that he made up when Grace first explained the concept to him.
“This one’s called Sonic Adventure 2,” Grace said, finishing up the controller calibration as he spoke, “It’s one of my favorites. I played it a lot when I was a kid.”

The person in the video is clearly a practiced archer, and they effortlessly hit bulls-eyes from double the distance of the spear throw. They fire multiple arrows in quick succession, and Rocky makes a little squeaking noise with every thunk they make into the target.
“Weapon is… very powerful.”
“Yeah, it certainly can be, but it takes a lot of practice to be able to shoot like that. Archery is more of a sport these days, but some people still hunt with a bow and arrows.”
Rocky falls silent again. Honestly, Grace is relishing in having the evolutionary upper hand for once. He’s put up with so much teasing from Rocky about being leaky, fragile, and stupid, and while it doesn’t really bother him it’ll be nice to have something to tease him back about. He can already picture himself clapping back to a Humans so squishy and weak with a Your species couldn’t even figure out slingshots!

The burning sensation in my lungs is worse now, spreading up into my sinuses and all the way down into my lungs. My breaths are speeding up, coming shallower, and there’s more resistance. It feels like my lungs are being squeezed, like I have to fight against them to get the air in. I double over, bracing my arms on a table. I taste something metallic as a steady stream of thin mucus makes its way up my throat into my mouth. I swallow it down but I’m gasping for air, panting like I just ran a marathon.
