Buck realises with a sinking feeling that it’s over. He’s dead. He thinks he should be panicking about this, but the acceptance has washed over him in a tidal wave. Water has filled his body. He rocks in time with the tide.

“You’re not? Since when?” Chimney frowns. “Who?”
It’s not Eddie’s fault that, at that exact moment, Buck walks in. So it’s not his fault that he opens his mouth and says, “Buck.”
Or, Eddie trips and falls into a lightly fraudulent HR-disclosed "consensual romantic relationship" with his best friend. Really, if you think about it, it's a win-win.

When Eddie finally confesses his love for Buck, instead of bringing them together, it breaks them.

Eddie turned off the engine of his truck and took a deep breath. He looked toward the house that held so much of his hope and just as much of his fear. He was still unsure if this was the right thing to do, but he knew this was now or never. He was going to tell Buck that he was in love with him. That could never be the wrong thing to say.
