Summary
Three years after the probes carrying Taumoeba and Dr. Ryland Grace's final message arrive on Earth, humanity launches an interstellar spaceship with a brand new mission. Thirty-six crew members (including two graduates of a certain San Franciscan junior high school) travel to the star 40-Eridani to make friendly contact with the Eridians and bring them the alien life form from Tau Ceti-E that can save their star if Dr. Grace's sacrifice failed.
Grace, now fifty-seven years old, is just trying to balance his life as a teacher while no longer being the only human on the planet anymore. It's a big adjustment, but Rocky and the Terra's Grace crew are going to make sure he's well taken care of.

Summary
Years pass. People grow. The world moves on without you. The Angel grew content with that for a while. Summary
Ryland Grace does not have a good track record when it comes to love. He figures it's all a big joke that everyone is in on except him.
Rocky knows better. He knows that there are more types of love than there are stars in the sky. But after a lifetime of failed relationships and bad romcoms, Grace remains skeptical, unless he can learn to come to terms with who he was and who he became.

“Need word,” Rocky says in baby-talk Eridian for me. The translator dutifully repeats “need word” in English a second later.
After fifteen minutes of bewildering back and forth between the three of us, we determine the word he needs is “declension.”
A year into the journey to Erid, Grace faces down his most formidable academic gauntlet since astrophage: the five-part polyphonic Eridian language. It’s only fair after Rocky mastered English, human mannerisms, Grace mannerisms- without so much as one complaint. And if learning Eridian might temper some of Grace’s desperate, near-complete dependence on Rocky in the future… well. That’s his own business.
Eridian breaks Grace’s brain, heart, and soul- and puts it back together.
