"I can take you home, kid, it’s not a big deal—“

“Fuck, just leave it will you?” He snaps, and Robby blinks. Drops his bag to the ground. Whitaker swallows and mumbles out a wet sounding 'please' before Robby is pulling the free chair close enough that when he sits in it, they’re almost touching.

“Jesus, what the fuck is going on Whitaker? You in some kind of trouble?”

    ---

Throughout an ordinary shift, Robby see's something off about Whitaker. He hides it well, but his mentor spends more time watching him than either of them realise. Things come to a head when Whitaker finds he can't really move, and Robby won't settle until he's helped.

“Boggy head wound, dizziness, vomiting, a killer headache, and retrograde amnesia. Oh, and a tongue lac. Haven’t had chance to look at that yet though.” As had apparently become his habit, Abbot patted his shoulder and gave him a gentle comforting shake. Dennis could practically hear him saying, ‘You can fit so many symptoms in this bad boy!’. “Last thing Whit remembers is going home yesterday,” he added.

“What happened?” Al-Hashimi said, serious and concerned.

“Man v puddle,” Shen quipped. “The puddle won."

“M’not a fucking kid!” Dennis spits. “Stop fucking calling me that.”

On the offensive, and unable to stop, Robby bites back: “Then stop fucking acting like one!”

Dennis slumps back into his chair, seceding silently, eyes glossing. Robby pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“Jesus, I— Forget it. I can’t talk to you when you’re like this,” Robby tells him, pulling his jacket from the back of his chair. “Go home, delete our chat history. This never happened. Don’t ever tell a soul about this.”

    Dennis laughs mirthlessly.

Robby is not amused. He zips up his jacket and leans down a little closer to the boy.

“I’m not fucking around, Whitaker. This stays between us. You need to take this to your grave.”

After a particularly prolonged dry spell, Dennis Whitaker decides to redownload Grindr. He doesn't realize the charming, anonymous, older man he's matched with is his Senior Attending until after they've already gone through a week of digital foreplay. Everything's a lot easier when you can't put a face to a name — or a name to a profile — isn't it?

    Summary

    “So. You like baseball?”

Even now, the fact that those were the next words out of Robby’s mouth is almost unbelievable to him. Until this summer, Dennis doesn’t think he’d been asked that question his entire life and now, it’s come up twice—first, on the day Robby left, and now again on the day of Robby’s return. It struck him as some strange kismet, sort of like an incomplete thought finally circling back around. The answer, without question, was and is an easy no. Even if you didn’t factor a rural Nebraskan upbringing into the equation, for most of his life, he wasn’t exactly encouraged in that direction. Dennis, however, had a sense that he understood where Doctor Robby was going, and wanted very much for him to continue. Robby, therefore, did not receive the spiel about the Omaha Storm Chasers that Roberto with the dislocated elbow received on the Fourth of July. Instead, Dennis smiled and shrugged. “Sure, who doesn’t.”

    “America’s pastime,” said Robby, pleased.

After the Fourth of July, Robby leaves.

    Whitaker follows.

Somewhere between Pittsburgh and the Great Plains, Dennis convinces him to come home.

Or: A getting-together oneshot that turned into a series about Robby and Dennis figuring out what they want to be to each other. Featuring yearning, hurt (but also comfort), Jack Abbot serving as Robby’s unlicensed therapist, Trinity Santos suffering more than Jesus, quite a lot of smut, actually, and gratuitous references to the great state of Nebraska.
