It somehow never crossed Jake’s mind that they’d meet – really meet – at some point.
The future versions of her he’d encountered always seemed familiar with him, but he’d assumed that was the natural effect of countless visits across space and time. Like, maybe she’d come to know him as her mysterious but cool time travelling buddy, in the same way he’d dubbed her as the beautiful girl his lucky soul just consistently gravitated toward.
He takes her outstretched hand and shakes it, letting autopilot guide him through the motions of any other introduction. “Detective Peralta. Welcome aboard.”
Her eyebrows furrow a bit as she gets a better look at him. “Do I know you from somewhere? I feel like I’ve seen you before.”
“Uh–” Jake’s mouth opens and closes dumbly. This probably isn’t a conversation to be had within earshot of half the bullpen. (Even if it was, he wouldn’t know where to start.) He shakes his head, letting out what he hopes is a casual chuckle. “No, no. I don’t think so. Although I have been told I look a lot like Jesse Eisenberg. Maybe it’s the hair?”

(Of course, David, with his freakish photographic memory and infuriating luck, only needed the flashing images beneath his eyelids to clue him in. He’d gone and found his soulmate less than an hour after he’d gotten his driver’s license.)

They’d first met in the fall of their freshman year.
Amy can still remember it with perfect clarity: how Jake rushed into the lecture hall, hair unruly and plaid shirt rumpled. He looked like he’d just woken up, or maybe never slept. Perhaps he’d pulled an all nighter in prep for their big exam. (She had gotten the recommended eight hours of sleep, naturally, and had gotten up with more than enough time to have a balanced breakfast and to go over her review sheets.)

Arms wrapping around her as he absorbed the impact of her body crashing into his, Jake’s brows had furrowed in confusion as the Mystery Woman twisted her head towards his, whispering into his ear - “There’s a guy over there that won’t stop hitting on me and I told him you were my boyfriend, please please PLEASE go along with it!”
