Here, Matt's made a second pass at killing himself, his little sister inherited a restrictive guardianship over him after the recent death of their mother, and his visions of a best friend that doesn't really exist are giving him the silent treatment. He's determined to get out of the hospital and finish what he started, but when his visions return to him they reveal something he'd never thought could be possible:
Jay is real. Jay exists in this timeline without him, and is leading a miserable existence of his own.
Thankfully, Jay's already told Matt how to fix things.

This is wrong, this is so wrong, he has no idea what’s even happening right now– some part of Matt attempts to replay these thoughts like a mantra, louder and louder in his mind, throwing them out like a spike strip to stop the getaway car of this, his deepest, darkest, longest-held desire.
