    The survey mission had seemed like such a simple assignment.

    Jim had said as much himself, standing on the transporter pad with his hands on his hips, grinning at Spock like the whole thing was a favor he was doing him. "Nothing but ferns and some odd-looking moss, Spock. You'll love it. Go catalog your plants, take your readings, be back by seventeen hundred."

    Spock had raised an eyebrow at the phrase your plants, as though ownership of flora were a concept he intended to dispute later, and had said nothing further before the transporter beam took him.

    Six hours later, he was carried back aboard the Enterprise on a stretcher, unconscious, with a gash above his left temple and green blood matting his hair, having apparently been struck by a falling branch—or, as Sulu reported with visible embarrassment, "a tree, sir, it just sort of came down on him"—while he'd been crouched over a particularly interesting specimen of moss.
