The Federation consists of a number of members whose species have telepathic or empathic abilities, and there have always been instances where this has led to tension or misjudgements. However, there are no recorded incidents which Spock can recall that would have prepared them for this.
It is a false comfort, when his Captain is returned to them in a catatonic, almost lifeless, state.
It is too much like Khan, too soon after Krall, to be acceptable.

“And if I do it then you have to do something for me? If I do it, you have to tell me your first name, and go on a date with me.” Jim stuck his hand out. Uhura eyed it, considering him for a moment before taking it and shaking it firmly, a smile burgeoning on her face.
“Vulcan.”
He froze. “What?”
“You have to learn Vulcan.”
In which Jim has to learn Vulcan for a bet, and learns a lot more along the way.

Summary
Jim Kirk is likable.
As in…people like him. He thrives on it, and for all of his pseudo-arrogance, he truly does care about what people think of him. When people genuinely like him for reasons other than being George Kirk’s son, it feels good. He knows that for the most part, he’s a good person, a fun person, a loyal person. He chooses to be the good things in the world because he sure can’t count on others to be that.
The point is, he’s likable. He tries not to compare himself to his first officer, but there are certain differences. Jim is warm. Spock is cold. Jim smiles. Spock barely lets the corner of his mouth tilt up.
All of this is to say that it doesn't make sense when a little girl they rescue chooses to latch onto Spock, and refuses to let go.
