Summary
Monsters were supposed to be terrifying.
That was what Shane had been taught– monsters were evil, dark, dangerous things that needed to be snuffed out the second they appeared. His parents had left his mattress firmly on the floor to prevent a monster under his bed, and his closet had no door for a closet monster to hide behind. He wasn’t allowed in the sea for fear of sea monsters, or the forest for fear of monsters hiding amongst the trees.
The only place he had really been allowed was the hockey rink. There were no hockey monsters, after all.
