He could feel her gaze on the side of his face, heavy and searching. He swallowed around the lump in his throat, wincing when the movement pulled at the bruising along his jaw. His whole body felt like one large, badly healed injury. There was a deep ache beneath his ribs every time he breathed, his left shoulder was stiff and swollen, and the side of his face still throbbed where it had been repeatedly slammed into the Master’s desk while he was bent over it.
“It will be okay, little duck,” he said in quiet, raspy French, his heart a staccato in his chest as their caseworker firmly knocked a second time. “We are safe here.”
He would make sure she was, at least.
